OSCAR NOMS and reactions

Well this morning at 7:30 the Academy has listed its nominations! And I must say, I am EXCEPTIONALLY pleased overall. There were some noteable shocks and snubs, but I think (for the most part) the good guys win. Here are the nominees .. and my reactions to them.

BEST MOTION PICTURE OF THE YEAR

THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON
FROST/NIXON
MILK
THE READER
SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

thoughts:
Well I was 4/5 in this category. I didn't expect "The Reader" love here. Especially when it snubbed out what I thought were front runners: "The Dark Knight" and "Wall-E". This film just shot to the top my list of must-see's. I also still have to see Frost/Nixon and of course Slumdog Millionaire. And from looking at the other nominees, as I predicted, Oscar ate up Benjamin Button - and it did receive the most awards of them all.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

RICHARD JENKINS in The Visitor
FRANK LANGELLA in Frost/Nixon
SEAN PENN in Milk
BRAD PITT in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
MICKEY ROURKE in The Wrestler

thoughts:
This is a very good list! And there is a notable shock, and a great one. (Last night I finished watching the Visitor and it was FANTASTIC.. Jenkins deserves where he is!) We saw one of two people lose their Oscar shots to Richard Jenkins here, most notably Leonardo DiCaprio and/or Clint Eastwood. The major shock here is that Clint Eastwood had 4 shots at nominations (actor and director for Gran Torino, director and score writer for Changeling) and got none of them. I still think there's a slight chance that a third contender could upset Rourke or Penn, but that's to talk about later. Although I have not seen all of these performance I feel solidly that they are among the best.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

ANNE HATHAWAY in Rachel Getting Married
ANGELINA JOLIE in Changeling
MELISSA LEO in Frozen River
MERYL STREEP in Doubt
KATE WINSLET in The Reader

thoughts:
I can breathe a HUGE sigh of relief! Angelina Jolie was not snubbed this year, thank Goodness. I did believe down deep all along that she was a lock for the nomination. However that doesn't mean there are not snubs here -- there are TONS of shocks and surprises here. I am certainly sure that Sally Hawkins (who has won the most pre-cursor awards, and just won a Golden Globe) is a little disappointed to not see her name on the shortlist. Those hoping that Kristin Scott Thomas could squeak out a nomination also may be upset that it didn't happen. And perhaps the biggest shock .. Kate Winslet gets nominated in lead for The Reader and not Revolutionary Road (who received BIG snubs all around). So when this was reported I knew then that the supporting actress race had just changed, as has this one. And congrats to Melissa Leo for staying strong in a small film!

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

JOSH BROLIN in Milk
ROBERT DOWNEY JR. in Tropic Thunder
PHILLIP SEYMORE HOFFMAN in Doubt
HEATH LEDGER in The Dark Knight
MICHAEL SHANNON in Revolutionary Road

thoughts:
Surprisingly no love was show to the Slumdog Millionaire cast, and I think Dev Patel was the biggest snub here. I knew they wouldn't go for Brad Pitt twice (even though he was fantastic in Burn After Reading). The "shock" here is the inclusion of Michael Shannon, making him the sole nominee from Revolutionary Road.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

AMY ADAMS in Doubt
PENELOPE CRUZ in Vicky Christina Barcelona
VIOLA DAVIS in Doubt
TARAJI P. HENSON in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
MARISA TOMEI in The Wrestler

Thoughts:
The Doubt 4some all get in! What a wonderful surprise. With Kate Winslet nominated in leading actress that blew this category wide open. Thankfully Tomei got in, she was wonderful! Penelope is not shock, and is now probably primed to win with Winslet in the right category. And, as predicted, Taraji P. Henson rides the Benjamin Button wave all the way to a nomination (that I still don't know if I agree with). Sadly both Rachel Getting Married girls are out as well. Overall, because of Adams and Tomei, I am happy!

thoughts:
A HUGE snub here with "The Wrestler" sung by Bruce Springstein. I am guessing the reason why, is because it played during the credits of the film, which usually will not be allowed in the running - but its sooo good and won soo much! Thank God Beyonce was snubbed! Along with Miley Cyrus also snubbed. And thankfully the 2 best songs from the fantastic Slumdog Millionaire were nominated .. maybe M.I.A. will perform!!
