The tony awards last night were overall a joy. I almost missed them, thank God Matt Kenyon called and asked if I was watching. So I tuned in and missed a bit - but what I did see was a joy.
First of all Chicago racked up!! The best regional theatre award went to Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, which I have visited many times. August: Osage County, a show that opened at the Steppenwolf (my workplace: Goodman Theatre, its their competition) picked up 5 Tony's including best play, best director, and 3 for acting. Which was fantastic! Tom Stoppards new show Rock and Roll was nominated for 5, were doing that show at Goodman next year. The Sea Farer, which was nominated and won something, will be at Steppenwolf next year. Its all very exciting.
The highlights for me were:
Seeing all the movie stars trying to be theatre actors this year: which included Gina Gershon and Marisa Tomei (I love them both actually).
The odd rap/musical performance from In the Heights was nice.
Of course the best moment for me was seeing Liza Minnelli! She looked AWESOME. Showing some leg, and even some cleavage. Work it girl.
