Popmatters 20 best females in 2008

PopMatters, a respected movie and pop culture blog has listed its top 20 female performances of the year, here's the list and a little of what they said on each winner:

#20 - MERYL STREEP in DOUBT
"Streep is nothing short of magnificent as the mean on the outside, frail on the inside nun who must uncover the truth and remove all reservation."

#19 - THANDIE NEWTON in W
"Newton’s nonsensical depiction of Condoleeza Rice makes the film that much more frightening."

#18 - CATHERINE DENEUVE in A CHRISTMAS TALE
"Catherine Deneuve portrays the matriarch of a neurotic, dysfunctional yet oddly congruous bourgeois clan to perfection. Like wine, she gets better with age."

#17 - ANGELICA HUSTON in CHOKE
"In this stunning, savage performance, Huston strips away the concept of death with dignity to offer up a sharp-tongued take on failing mental faculties."

#16 - VIOLA DAVIS in DOUBT
"Viola Davis may only have one scene in Doubt, but I guarantee that it’s the scene you’ll remember. A five-minute wonder."

#15 - MIKEALA FISCHER in TELL NO ONE
"Fisher uses five minutes of screen time to create an unforgettable villain and elevate the entire work."

#14 - KATE WINSLET in THE READER
"Selling both lust/love for a teenager and sympathy for a concentration camp guard (herself) is quite a tall order; then again, we’re talking Kate Winslet."

#13 - KRISTIN SCOTT THOMAS in I'VE LOVED YOU SO LONG
"Her masterful investment in suppression yields a concluding flood of emotions that transcends the film’s flimsy third act plot devices. She is a revelation."

#12 - DEBRA WINGER in RACHEL GETTING MARRIED
"No other actress could have endowed the character of Abby with such simmering volatility and hid it behind an empty smile the way she does."

#11 - ROSEMARIE DEWITT in RACHEL GETTING MARRIED
"In a film which features Anne Hathaway and Debra Winger chewing up the dialogue like champions in every scene they are in, someone had to hold down the emotional middle ground here, thankfully there is the breath of fresh air in RoseMarie DeWitt's performance."

#10 - ANGELINA JOLIE in CHANGELING
"As the most famous mother since the Virgin Mary, the act of watching Jolie’s performance is comparable to seeing her worst nightmare come true, one of her kids stolen. Not only is it her best performance its one that is utterly transfixing."

#9 - PENELOPE CRUZ in VICKY CHRISTINA BARCELONA
"By the time we finally get to meet Juan Antonio’s ex-wife, described as insane and murderous by everyone in the film, there’s almost no way she can live up to our expectations. Penelope Cruz obliterates them."

#8 - DIANE WEIST in SYNEDOCHE NEW YORK
"Wiest imbues her dual roles with a sweetly stabilizing nature that delivers the protagonist from his torment and likewise relieves the audience from an intellectual exercise."

#7 - ANNE SAVAGE in MY WINNIPEG
"Ann Savage not only owns her role, but she owns the movie. One leaves wanting to see a film, where she is the central character."

#6 - MICHELLE WILLIAMS in WENDY AND LUCY
"As Wendy, a young drifter on the brink of financial ruin, Williams is both vulnerable and tough—and absolutely riveting."

#5 - KATE WINSLET in REVOLUTIONARY ROAD
"Winslet walks the fine line between shrew and shrewd flawlessly, making her displeased spouse both the subject of pity and scorn. While she will probably win her first Oscar for playing the sexually open war criminal in The Reader, this was the much braver performance."

#4 - MARISA TOMEI in THE WRESTLER
"Mickey Rourke’s heartbreaking return as The Ram in The Wrestler has been justly feted, but Marisa Tomei is equally poignant as his love interest, Cassidy. Tomei never lets us forget the stakes for her character, so we always understand exactly where she’s coming from."

#3 - MELISSA LEO in FROZEN RIVER
"This studious actress molds an anti-heroine that feels right at home in our fraught economic times. Leo speaks volumes in her silence, letting her face tell the story sans make-up, sans affectation; she knows her character, Ray.

#2 - ANNE HATHAWAY in RACHEL GETTING MARRIED
"You can almost taste the acid seeping from Hathaway’s performance even as the first sarcastic line leaves her mouth. This is her moment."

#1 - SALLY HAWKINS in HAPPY GO LUCKY
"Hawkins brings multifaceted warmth to Poppy that encompasses an enormous range of emotions but deftly blends them all into an earnest optimism. She brings to Leigh’s working class milieu a breath of fresh air that brightens the darker corners of the film."

Lil' Kim Mad

Lil' Kim is PISSED about the new Notorious BIG movie. She released a statement saying the following:

"The film studio and producers involved were more concerned about painting me as a 'character' to create a more interesting story line instead of a person with talent, self-respect and who was able to achieve her own career success through hard work… Even though my relationship with Big was at times very difficult and complicated (as with most relationships we have all experienced at one time or another), it was also genuine and built on great admiration and love for each other. Regardless of the many lies in the movie and false portrayal of me to help carry a story line through, I will still continue to carry his legacy through my hard work and music."

At the flick's NY premiere, the screenwriter said he understands why Lil Kim might not like the film, but added "I think that Naturi (Naughton) did a great job playing Kim. I think people are going to be a lot more sympathetic towards (Lil Kim) after seeing the movie."

I love Kim .. NO MATTER WHAT

Jennifer's Return

After the horrible slayings of her mother, brother, and nephew, Jennifer Hudson is making her return to singing. The Oscar Winner was scheduled to sing at the Obama inauguration, but she pulled out (most certainly because of the family struggles). However she will be performing at the Super Bowl! She will sing the national anthem. And you know it will be amazing!

Rourke for PETA

During his Golden Globe speech, for winning best actor, Mickey Rourke thanked his most loyal friend, his dog. (which may have been the most real and sentimental moments in awards show history) And now he and his pup are official spokesmodels for PETA. Here is the kickass ad.

Daily Amy 3: No More Blake

Amy Winehouse has recieved divorce papers from her jailed husband Blake. She has given them to her lawyers, and the divorce should be settled soon (as in the UK its a very quick procedure). Amy did not sign a pre-nup and it is feared in her camp that the jailbird will try to get as much money as he can.

Daily Amy 2: Movie Star?

Universal Pictures has sent a script to Amy Winehouse, wanting her to star in a major motion picture. The film is about a troubled high school, think Dangerous Minds starring Michelle Pfieffer. Amy is wanted to play the leading role, of the schools music teacher - which of course will allow her to sing in the film. Most exciting is they are pursuing Johnathan Rhys Meyers as her co-star. If you know me, you know my head just exploded off my shoulders. I love JRM, and you KNOW I love Amy!

Universal wants amy so much that they have offered Winehouse free acting lessons at the Royal Academy of Music Theatre department in London to prepare for the role. The studip however has said that Amy must: Improve her health and state of mind. Saying: "You can't have a teacher looking like a scrawney crack addict. It's hoped that this offer will be an incentive for her to continue becoming all the way clean and sober."

Hey it worked for Courtney Love when she switched to movies -- I bet it could work for Amy!!

Daily Amy: Sneaky Drink Theif

This may be one of my favorite stories of Miz Winehouse EVER. On vacation in St. Lucia she is up to quite a lot of trickery. The picture above for example. No Amy didn't fall over in a stupor, she is actually on her hands and knees stalking out a table of cocktails, because the bartender had cut her off. She is literally sneaking on the floor, waiting for them to leave, and jacking their drinks! And she has been up to similar hijinx lately on her vacation. The Sun ran a recent report with hotel staff commenting on Amy's sneaky ways to get her drink on:

"She was spotted creeping up behind one woman, asking for a cigarette and then sprinting away with her cocktail."

"We keep catching her crawling past bars, or hiding behind chairs. She grabs guests’ drinks and runs off, like a squirrel with a nut."

You know Amy is having the time of her life. This is HILARIOUS!
And hey, it could be worse. I think this is just plain ole Winehouse fun!

Daily Amy 3: Nudie Dance!

Here is Amy doing a naked jig on her hotel balcony last week.
YOU GO GIRL

Courtney follows Radiohead

Courtney Love is taking a hint from Radiohead and offering her new album "Nobodies Daughter" online as a pay what you want download before its released in stores. It will be released next month on CourtneyLove.com and you can pay anything from a penny to above. She had this to say:

"Millions of people want this album ... well maybe at least ten people want it. And I think a lot of musicians rip people off with shit albums for too expensive of a price. So you can pay whatever you want for my new album. The more important thing for me is for people to actually listen to it."

Daily Amy 2: Trapeze

Below are some pictures of Amy Winehouse training on the circus trapeze today on the beach in St. Lucia. Its so wonderful to see her healthy, happy, sober, and having fun! Keep it up!!

Method Mickey

Mickey Rourke (yes that is him pictured, from the 80's when he was hot to trot) opened up to Mens Health Journal how he bulked back up to prepare for his Golden Globe winning role in the Wrestler. He trained twice a day with an Israeli cage fighter for four hours and ate up to 7 seven large meals a day to bulk up. He plainly puts it: "When I'm a wrestler, I behave like a wrestler."

New Kelly!

Kelly Clarkson is in need for a comeback .. and just in time for the American Idol premiere tonight, her new song: My Life Would Suck Without You, has hit the internet. Besides hating the title, and the air brushed album cover, its a really catchy fun song!! Here it is:

New Yorks Birthday Bash

Speaking of New York (Tiffany Pollard), she had a birthday last night .. and this is what she wore to her party:

New York .. A Wrestler?

Looks like Tiffany Pollard (aka New York, my favorite reality television personality ever) is going to take a cue from Mickey Rourke and join proffesional wrestling. Apparently the WWE (world wrestling federation) has been trying to get her to become a female wrestler fo years, and sources say they are close to making a deal. Woah! So much wrestling that I look forward to if this is the case. I smell another reality show too ... New York Becomes a Wrestler - coming soon to VH1.

Daily Amy: Lapdance

Amy Winehouse was interrupted last night, in a big way. She was giving her new boyfriend Joshua Bowman a naked lapdance in her hotel suite when a cleaning woman came into the room. The cleaning lady has been interviewded by various sources and said:

"I was a little shocked to see Amy in some high heeled shoes and nothing else. However she was very polite and turned to me, in all of her nakedness, and said: Can you please come back later love? I smiled and left. It was all very funny and I am very embarrassed."

HAHAHA!

Lady Gaga loves Amy Winehouse

New Pop Princess, with the #1 song in America, is showing her love for Amy Winehouse in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine. Here's what she had to say about my girl:

"Amy is a real artist. I get frustrated when I tour so much that my voice is messed up. But I always say to myself that I watch performances from Amy where I swear she didn't hit a note, and she was shot and shot deep on something, but I can't take my eyes off that beautiful girl. There's something about her that's so honest. That was what the Seventies and Eighties were about, and what women were about then, and that's why legends were created. It wasn't about manicures. She is the most talented woman alive."

LIZA ON SNLy

you read it right - here is Liza Minnelli live on SNL this past weekend!!

Anne DESTROYED

watch below to see Anne Coulter get DESTROYED on the view!! YAAAY!

Daily Amy 3: Night O Fun

Amy Winehouse rented out the lounge of the resort she is staying in overnight, and invited all guests who are staying at the resort to a night of fun and food and drinks, on her. She payed for everyone to enjoy a night out, and at the lounge she even sang 2 of her own songs: Tears Dry on Their Own and a cover of To Know Him is to Love Him, on the piano. She dedicated the 2nd song to her new boyfriend Joshua Bowman.

Daily Amy 2: Blake files for Divorce

As Amy lives it up (and seemingly is becoming clean) in St. Lucia on an extended vacation, Blake is rotting in jail and today has filed for divorce from his estranged wife. Amy gave an interview yesterday that: she has just forgotten she is married, that Blake was a bad influence, and that he was rubbish in bed. I think the divorce is the right thing, however I think Blake will now try to milk Amy for every penny she's worth, seeing that they didn't sign a pre-nup. Time will only tell, however the divorce is a good thing I think.
