Rosie Live! Review

Rosie O'Donnell premiered the first in a series of live variety shows last night and it was a big fun, embarrasing, entertaining, weird, mess. It was all of those things at once. I do hope that she will still be allowed a Christmas version of her variety show because I think she is onto something, however I think it was majorly flawed. Let's talk about what worked first:

* Opening the show with a song and dance number including the legendary Liza Minnelli is always a treat. Liza is out and about very rarely so I have to give Rosie credit for getting her, and opening her show with her on prime time.
* The performance by Alanis Morissette (of the song "Not as We") was by far the most entertaining and well performed pieces of the night. Alanis was the true talent on this talent show. She looked amazing, sounded amazing, and brought a real sense of class to the evening.
* Kathy Griffin is always hillarious, and Kathy Griffin AS Nancy Grace (my favorite idiotic talking head on television) was brilliant.
* Jane Krakowski, Tony winner and costar of 30 Rock, proved her salt while singing a rather corny give-away song to the tune of "You Gotta Get a Gimmick" from Gyspy. She sang, she danced, she stripped. Very cute.

And now lets talk about what didn't work:

* Random guest slots with nothing to do. We had Alec Baldwin, Clay Aiken, Conan O'Brien, Harry Connick Jr, Rachel Ray, and a couple others showed up to do nothing. It was obviously all rehearsed and all very hokey. They could have cut a number of them and given Alanis another song, or given Liza more to do - anything.
* The random "talent" acts. Sure the 2 brothers could dance well - but we were given a 2 minute snippit of them, whereas the "Spinning" dancers were given about 4 minutes. 4 minutes of spinning, and hula hooping, etc? Could Rosie not have found better talent? Maybe she should have let Conan do some standup, or perhaps allow Harry Connick Jr to sing more than 30 seconds of his Christmas song.
* The ending number with Gloria Estephan was just ridiculous. I hope to post it online later so you can see what I mean. It may be the worst musical number on television ever.
* The comedy segments. Rosie, we get it. Youre overweight, youre gay, and you dont get along with Donald Trump -- its all old news.
* However the worst thing about Rosie Live was indeed Rosie O'Donnell. I think Rosie is a funny woman, and I actually agree with her politics and think she is a fun and charming television personality. Her old daytime talk show was one of my favorites, which I never missed. And she breathed new and exciting life into the View. HOWEVER - Rosie we don't wanna hear you sing, see you dance, or listen to countless unfunny jokes or gags. HONESTLY- couldn't Liza have sung alone? She is the true triple threat - and she's 70-something and still singing, dancing, and acting. She didn't need you throwing her off or dragging her down. Rosie sang too much, danced with too many little kids, tried too hard to be funny, and brought her own show down.

So there you have it. I think the show was onto something, and thanks to Alanis, Liza, and Rosie's brass balls to bring this show to television, I did enjoy it. I just hope Act II is better.

Rosie Brings in the Big Guns

Rosie O'Donnell has a new vareity show premiering on primetime television over Thanksgiving, and she has released the list of guest stars who will be performing, and its pretty impressive (including some of my favorite entertainers ever). Alanis Morissette will perform. Kathy Griffin will do standup (as will O'Donnell). Alec Baldwin and Jane Krakowski will be in comedy skits. Ne-Yo will perform. And best of all Liza Minnelli will perform a song or two (one which is being billed as something she hasn't sung live in 30 years!) This is getting me excited!! TUNE IN!

She Rocks!

My blog was named after this song by Alanis Morissette, from her latest album Flavors of Entanglement. The song of course is Citizen of the Planet. And Alanis here proves, as always, that shes so much better live. Love her, love this.

Alanis at the V

While Amy Winehouse was showing up late and performing somewhat disasterously (although I still love it) at the V Music festival in London, Canada's own Alanis Morissette showed up and did an amazing set. NME magazine reviewed Alanis as the best live act of the night. "She barely said a word between songs, because she doesn't have too. Her singing and songwriting explain it all." Her set list, for the hour show, included:
Uninvited, All I Really Want, 8 Easy Steps, Everything, Hand in my Pocket, Moratorium, You Oughtta Know, Ironic, So Pure, and Thank U.

I Love Alanis

My first real musical obsession Alanis Morissette, just took a terrificly scandalous trip to the Vatican. She was there to meet the pontiff, and was raised a devout Catholic. However - she has forgotten a lot of the rules of the religion. Morissette says the problems occurred as she left the stage after meeting the pope, and did not know whether to walk in front of cardinals or not.
"I'm post-Catholic; I don't know how it works anymore, so there was this awkward moment and I walked in front of them. They were all French and they were speaking about me behind me, saying how rude and horrible I was. I speak French, so I bit my tongue the whole way out and they were just ripping me apart, and then right at the tail end. ... I just turned back and spoke to them in French and said, 'Thank you so much for your kindness.'"

Coming to Chicago

The awesome Alanis Morissette is coming to Chicago soon - so all you Chicagonians looking for a good show - here it has come. Osctober 17th Alanis will play the prestigious Chicago Theatre. Its all a part of her Flavors of Entanglement tour, and its sure to be awesome! I hope to be there. (if you havent gotten the cd .. what are you waiting for? go get it)

Frankly Scarlett .....

It seems there is no hard feelings between Alanis Morissette and Scarlett Johansson, now that miss Scarlet is engaged to former Alanis boytoy Ryan Reynolds. Morissette's (AWESOME) new album "Flavors of Entanglement" deals with her breakup with Reynolds which occured a year ago. Since then Reynolds and Scarlett have become a couple and are now engaged. "On a certain spiritual level, I feel like everyone's where they need to be." Morissette says.

Well if makes you feel any better Alanis, your album outsold Scarlett's debut album (Anywhere I lay my head, a cool collection of Tom Waits covers) 10 to 1. Alanis' album currently sits at #5 on the Billboards (#3 on itunes) while Scarlett is at #245 on Billboard and not on the itunes chart at all. Revenge is sweet - one way or another.

overdue new studio album! Let me tell you all, I have always been an Alanis fan - but some of the last albums have been somewhat of a let down. Her new release: "Flavors of Entanglement" is a masterpiece. There isn't a weak song, however there are some standouts:
